Volunteering Programs

Volunteering

International volunteering promotes cross-cultural learning that helps create global awareness, understanding between cultures and provides the platform for positive change. Our volunteers teach in schools, churches, build homes for impoverished people, provide vocational training and programs for street kids and  with local organizations and churches to distribute aid and improve the quality of life for people throughout Uganda. All participants come from all types of backgrounds. Either Students, families, groups, professionals, gap year students or recent retirees looking to take some time off and offer their skills and knowledge to those who need it.

We have placements ranging from, Long Term Volunteering, Mid Term Volunteering and Short Term Volunteering for for participants from all  over the world. All projects are aimed at providing service for community development and all of the volunteer placements have a very rich cultural input that is vital for providing a fulfilling volunteer experience for the participating international volunteer. We provide great opportunities for real volunteers, check our prices and requirements at our FAQs page

What You Can Do!

VMO's most opportunities for international volunteers fall into five categories. These categories allow you to clearly determine where your skills or interest are best met. Keep in mind that though skills are important, a sincere willingness to learn and work is often all that is required to make a valuable contribution.

Health and medical placements provide volunteers the opportunity to work in small local health clinics or health projects. Teaching in schools or in remote villages teaching English, math, computers, environmental education, HIV awareness training, art and physical education. Conservation placements allow volunteers to work help local projects carrying out community health activities. Volunteers can assist in orphanages, in day care centres, in youth at risk programs or in one of our many social programs that focus on women and children. Building programs provide opportunity for volunteers to build homes, hospitals, clinics, schools or libraries. To view placement options visit our Homepage

This is a program that centers mainly on marginalized children between 3 year and 12 years of age many of which are orphans, needy or homeless. In this program, applicants will work with orphans in orphanages and child care centers plus working with community child care out reach projects.
Activities include caring for children, playing with children, helping with daily chores, helping with home work and much much more.Volunteers help with feeding, organizing play, arts and crafts, hygiene and HIV/AIDS education appropriate to the children's' age level (3 to 12 years).

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:

Community outreach placements can include youth mentoring, HIV prevention and AIDS care, home visiting, sanitation and hygiene, public health, women's groups focusing on vocational skills and women's rights, and teaching modern organic farming methods. For volunteers with a medical background, placements can include working with health-based organisations.

Community Outreach also includes home visits to elderly, disabled, and persons living with HIV/AIDS to keep company, offer relief, and assess needs. This is a good opportunity for volunteers to see the daily challenges faced by marginalized groups in Uganda. A community outreach placement is particularly appropriate for volunteers with great ideas and enthusiasm for grassroots development. This is a real opportunity for deep cultural exchange.

HEALTH & MEDICINE:

Volunteers in the Health & Medicine Program work along with  staff in hospitals and community clinics in different locations across Uganda. Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer’s qualifications, experience and knowledge.Qualified doctors and nurses can carry full day to day treatment of various diseases. Medical students and Pre med students can assist the doctors and nurses in their work and observe their work to gain knowledge and experience.

Medical volunteers work in the areas of maternal health, mental health, surgery, laboratories, counseling and testing.Volunteers who are interested in health issues and doing ‘hands on’ clinical work, this is the program suited for you!

BUILDING PROGRAM

We welcome volunteers for the  on-going construction and water building projects in the community for manual labor jobs working with skilled and unskilled local people on i.e farming, pig rearing, construction of churches, orphanages and renovation work. Volunteers do not need prior experience,a good sense of humor and helping spirit are required but skilled workers are very welcome.  This is also a very "hands dirty sort" of program.
